Racing & Sponsorship > STP Racing and Sponsorship History

Paula Murphy

Thanks to tuners and enthusiasts, STP has grown to become the world’s most famous fuel additive and engine care brand, and it all started on the race track.

Thanks to American Art Arfons, we had the World Land Speed Record under our belt by 1964, and we’ve gained fame in the fast lane ever since.

The undisputed ‘King’ of NASCAR, Richard Petty, joined us in 1972 for a relationship that spanned 20 years. He brought home a record seven Championship victories and 200 race wins.  And because you can’t have enough of a good thing, STP still helps to fuel the success of Richard Petty Motorsports team today.

With a motorsports heritage as rich as ours, it’s no coincidence that many of our track warriors of the past are racecar legends today - like the unique STP Lotus 56 gas turbine Indy car from 1968, and the F1 STP March 711 of 1971.

40 years later, we’re back to the motorsports arena where we began, sponsoring another World Land Speed Record bid, this time to be the first to break 1,000mph, with the British BLOODHOUND SSC team.

That battle’s scheduled for 2013, but today you’ll find STP active in motorsport sponsorships worldwide, including with the iconic marque that’s every schoolboy’s dream, Ferrari, as we compete, with the series’ youngest driver pairing, in the FIA European GT3 Championship with AF Corse in an STP Ferrari 458 Italia.
